Champions League Matchday 1

The most watched annual sporting event in the world begins on Tuesday with some big matches including Liverpool/PSG, Real Madrid/Roma and Inter/Tottenham. Reigning champions Real Madrid look to defend their title, Mo Salah’s Liverpool look for revenge, PSG look to finally break into the Semifinals, can Barcelona finally knock off their rivals and will an English time finally return to the summit. So many storylines but only one team will have eternal club football glory.

All-Time Record: 23-22-5 (-0.7 Units)
Matchweek 4 Record: 5-5-0 (+0.0 Units)

For these previews, since there are 16 matches in this matchweek, I will give a pick for all 16 (bold, I know) but only preview the matches I think you should watch/look out for. We’ve waiting long enough let’s get this party started again…

Tuesday, September 18th

Group A, 3:00 pm EST

Borussia Dortmund @ Club BruggeBorussia Dortmund (-0.5, -130)

Atletico Madrid @ AS Monaco Monaco have not looked good this season and I don’t see Atletico slipping up here. Atletico Madrid (-0.5, -130)

Group B, 12:55 pm EST

PSV Eidenhoven @ FC Barcelona Lionel Messi and Barcelona won all of their home games last season in the Champions League very convincingly and that won’t change. You better believe they’re pissed Real Madrid have won 3 straight and they’re out to prove they’re the best team in Spain and possibly the world. FC Barcelona (-2.5, -110).

Tottenham @ Inter Milan  Spurs will be without Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris for another match, which will be vital in their trip to the San Siro in Milan. I can’t fade an Inter team in a home Champions League match under the lights at the San Siro. Inter Milan (Pickem, -110).

Group C, 3:00 pm EST

Napoli @ Red Star Belgrade Even in the tough atmosphere, Napoli’s quality will far exceed that of Red Star’s. Napoli (-1, +125)

PSG @ Liverpool The biggest match of this week’s Champions League play will take place in Liverpool on Tuesday as Neymar, Mbappe and PSG make their first appearances in England in 10 years. This line absolutely blows my mind as Liverpool are favored against arguably the most talented team they will face all year. I love PSG as underdogs in this match even at Anfield and I’m taking them for TWO UNITS. PSG (+0.5, -120).

Group D, 3:00 pm EST

Lokomotiv Moscow @ Galatasaray In a matchup like this, don’t fade the Turkish side at home. Galatasaray (-0.5, -110)

FC Porto @ FC Schalke Schalke have yet to find their form in the Bundesliga and Porto always come ready to play in the Champions League. FC Porto (Pickem, +110)

Wednesday, September 19th

Group E, 12:55 pm EST and 3:00 pm EST

AEK Athens @ Ajax – AEK Athens (+1.5, -125)

Bayern Munich @ Benfica A trap game here for Bayern as they head to Portugal to face Benfica. I don’t see Bayern running away from Benfica here as they are always a tough out at home. Benfica (+1, +110)

Group F, 12:55 pm EST, 3:00 pm EST

Hoffenheim @ Shakhtar Donetsk – Shakhtar Donetsk (-0.5, -105)

Lyon @ Manchester City Even if this screams push, I like City to get their highly anticipated Champions League campaign off to a good start at home here. Manchester City (-2, -130)

Group G, 3:00 pm EST

Roma @ Real Madrid A semifinalist from last season and the champion face off in Madrid on Wednesday. Madrid dropped points at the weekend and although they’ve overall looked great in to start the year without Ronaldo, they may not find success right away in the Champions League without the competitions all-time leading scorer. Take the points in this one. Roma (+2, -135) *ODDS AS OF 10:00 am EST on 9/19*

CSKA Moscow @ Victoria Plzen – CSKA Moscow (+0.5, -120) *ODDS AS OF 10:00 am EST on 9/19*

Group H, 3:00 pm EST

Juventus @ Valencia Unleash said Cristiano. He faces an old foe in Valencia and now that he’s found the back of the net for Juve for the first time, expect his form to soar. You’d be a idiot to fade Juve in this. Juventus (-0.5, -130).

Manchester United @ Young Boys The fact that Manchester United are only (-0.5) favorites in this one speaks to the trouble they’ve been having. Yes, they’ve won their last two in the league but the cloud around the club remains. But you’d be an idiot to fade them here as they’ll make Young Boys look like… young boys (cringe). Manchester United (-0.5, -140).

That’s all for this week’s Champions League picks! Picking 16 games is absolutely ludicrous but I don’t care because it will be lot’s of fun.

Stay Kickin’ It. Peace.
